BIG TAIL ELEPHANTS
In 1990s, some avant-garde artworks popped up on the streets and stalls of Guangzhou’s downtown, which was a key art feature of Big Tail Elephants, one of the most important art groups in Guangzhou at that time. In 2016, Guangdong Times Museum organized a retrospective for Big Tail Elephants. The design of art derivatives for this retrospective was of great expectations. Restricted by the copyright, the design of art derivatives cannot purely use the artist's work. Therefore, how to connect the artist's work, the memory of the times and the contemporary perception has become a challenge. Echoing the artistic behavior feature of Big Tail Elephants, “popping up” in downtown markets, the design of derivatives used some typography and characters that was shown on the streets in Guangzhou in the 1990s. The derivatives design hopes to follow the footsteps of Big Tail Elephants and rebuild the textures of the history so as to reconstruct how Guangzhou looked like in 1990s in people's minds. By this way, the design tackled the challenge of connection, and evoked, memorized and collected sensations and emotions that created by the unique symbol of "Guangzhou".
